Launching the Sony PS3

Sony

Product Launch

One of my highest profile projects was launching the Playstation3 on Sony’s official online store SonyStyle.com in 2006. I was 24 when I launched the PS3 and was already 2 years into my career at Sony. My project manager assigned me the ps3 product and I was so excited about it, it was the hottest product line Sony created, and the Playstation is the best selling Sony product in the history of the company. Fast forward to November 2013 and the official count of PS3’s sold were over 80 million – and for me to be the one to launch that product on the official Sony website and consumer site was an honor. But that honor came with a list of challenges.

The project consisted of taking raw specifications and turning them into consumer friendly content for SonyStyle.com. This was something I was used to accomplishing as I was already the lead for the TV & Home Entertainment section of SonyStyle.

One thing that was unique about the PS3 project, was I did not receive any images along with the raw specifications. I literally had to comb the internet for images of the PS3 and its included controller. The reason I was not sent any images was the amount of secrecy of the new PlayStation3 – Playstation and Sony are treated like separate companies and the Playstation company did not let anyone get the official images of the gaming console, even Sony’s official consumer website, sonystyle.com!

Gathering the images was the first problem, now finding the actual specifications for the hardware were next. The specifications I received did not have the specs of the highly touted Cell-microprocessor – it simply had a blank text box next to the “Processor” field. Again, I had to comb the internet for any information I could get on the PS3… yes, I was creating this product page for the official Sony consumer website, and yes – the information was gathered by random fan boy forums, gadget blog leaks and social media posts.

The last challenge is a common issue faced in most projects, time. I only had 2 weeks to gather the mission assets needed to launch the product, write all the copy needed – both a long and short description, and get everything QA’d, and ready to be pushed live.

Lets Recap the challenges with launching the PS3:

  • No Product Shots
  • Incomplete Specifications
  • Tight Deadline

Regardless of any challenges, the product was really exciting to work on. I was one of the first to learn about the highly anticipated gaming console, and learn about new technologies like Blu-Ray, Cell-Microprocessor, and motion sensing controllers. The launch went smoothly, and I am still honored to be responsible for launching the high profile PS3.

Growing Trapster to over 20 Million Users

Trapster

Trapster was a the career equivalent to a roller coaster ride, I never knew what was going to happen next… I could be flipped upside down, I could puke, or it could all come to an abrupt halt. When I joined Trapster there were around 150,000 users. Within the first year (2009) the number of users reached over 9 MILLION. Eventually by 2010 there would be over 20 MILLION Trapster users.

How did I contribute to the rapid growth of Trapster? The answer was Social Media Marketing, Press Outreach, and Product Management. 2009 was the perfect storm for launching a new mobile app. There were already Trapster apps created for BlackBerry and Nokia devices, so when the Apple iPhone came out, Trapster could be ported to the device and be one of the first apps available on iTunes. Besides Apple just getting into the mobile application game, Social Media was really becoming huge. Twitter was the leader, and Facebook was quickly catching up. Having the advantage of being available early on the iTunes App Store, and being one of the first companies to use Social Media to market, Trapster was poised for success.

Qualcomm Developed Tagg the Pet Tracker

Qualcomm

Tagg the Pet Tracker

Tagg the Pet Tracker, a Qualcomm developed product, utilizing GPS, cellular, mapping, and radio technology. This was a fun project for me, as it combined my love for pets with technology. As director of customer service, I revamped the entire methodology of Qualcomm’s customer service, and created more of a social community customer care portal. With over 40,000 customers who were already passionate about the product, and keeping pets safe – it was great to give them access to helping other pet lovers through Tagg’s customer service community.

will.i.am’s PULS Wearable

will.i.am

will.i.am PULS

I was asked to be a beta tester for will.i.am’s wearable called the PULS. The PULS is a wearable smart device that has its own sim card, therefor can be your primary phone as well. It was great to be brought in again to work with will.i.am. Though the PULS did not have the success it should have, it did lead to the creation of IAM’s next product the DIAL.

San Diego Chargers Fans Community | Reaching over 1 MILLION fans per week.

San Diego Chargers

As a hobby I decided to start a San Diego Chargers fan community, and it just exploded to over 50,000 subscribers. It has led to monthly meetings with both the Mayor of San Diego and the Chairman of the San Diego Chargers, as we have been working to get a new football stadium built. I have also been featured on most local news channels in San Diego as well as national coverage through ESPN’s outside the lines.

  • In his role as Director of Customer Service, Sean was instrumental in leading the migration from our old provider (High Cost Labor Market) to our new Call Center located outside the US. The process went smoothly and related cost savings (~30%) were realized in the timeframes that Sean had laid out (once implementation / training / transfer expenses were complete). Sean also led and directed an initiative with the Call Center to improve our “Save” metrics, increasing call center unit sales from ~70 units/mo to 400+/mo. In short, although I only worked with Sean for a little over a year, I was impressed by his mastery of our Call Center operations, his can do attitude, and overall professionalism.(especially given my background as Call Center Finance lead at Microsoft). I would recommend him for any future endeavors he is considering.

  • Sean's detail driven, ethically business-minded, and enjoyably pleasant attitude was an accepted fact in the work environment in which we interfaced, daily. With a "show you, show me" management style it was a pleasure doing business and life in general with him. Sean is driven for results, however, never forgets the people that journey with him on projects or daily tasks. His results are product of the labor and hard work he puts into whatever is set before him. It was always a pleasure working with him.
